Q&A WITH ARTIST & WRITER LISA CAINES

Q1 – Your debut art children’s book is full of lovely art. How did you pick which ones to use?

LC: Thank you. I decided to use a variety of animals including some not so well-known animals. I wanted to make sure I didn’t use too many of the same animal.

Q2 - And so many wonderful animals. What are some of your favourite animals and your drawings?

LC: My favourite animals are birds and cats. My favourite drawings are Jay-Jay the Blue jay and Ollie the Owl.

Q3 - When did you start drawing?

LC: I started drawing when I was four.

Q4 - What do you enjoy drawing and working on the most?

LC: I enjoy drawing animals and cartoons the most.

Q5 - The words are good, but the art makes them come alive, how did you work with the animal’s names and the words?

LC: I pictured what the animal would look like as they were narrated.

Q6 – Animal Magic is a children’s fictional tale of you as an animal keeper so to speak, would you have wanted to do that job in real life?

LC: Yes, I would. I love animals and would love to work with them.

Q7 - I think it would make a great TV cartoon, can you see that and what stories would you give some of your animal friends?

LC: I would love for it to be turned into a cartoon. I would like to give some stories of how the animals live and interact with nature.

Q8 – Do you plan to do more Animal Magic books, and when can we expect the next one?

LC: Yes. I’m already working on more drawings and hoping to have another one released soon.

Q9 – Are there plans to do any other type of art books? I know you like horror and Tv?

LC: I love horror and would love to do a book of horror art.

Q10: What or who inspires you?

LC: My mom. She always encouraged me to pursue my dreams, even when other people tried to discourage me.

Q11 – Where do you see your artwork taking you in the next five years?

LC: Hopefully around the world lol. I’m hoping to have a successful career with my art. I’m going to be putting out more books of my artwork and I hope people enjoy them.

Q12 – And finally what advice would you give to up-and-coming artist or children books writers?

LC: I would tell them to never give up. Use social media like Twitter and Facebook to promote their work. Reach out to publishing houses. Don’t get discourage by rejection and don’t give up if it doesn’t happen right away.
