SNAPPY INTERVIEW WITH NICOLA JONES

QUESTION 1: What or who inspired you to take up photography?

NICOLA: I have always been artistic I suppose.

The age of the digital camera, camera phones have made it easy to access to seeing and print your own images easily. The more photos I took, the more images I wanted to create.

QUESTION 2: What gave you the idea behind your first photography collection – Black & White by the Sea?

NICOLA: I like to play around and I think that a lot of my photos that I take are more suited to black and white. They make them more poignant, striking and I love being by the Sea.

QUESTION 3: Do you have a favourite photographer or writer and why?

NICOLA: Ahh. Now there are so many fantastic photographers. But one who I have learnt about and now love his photos is the late Chris Killip. His candid black and white shots of Skinningrove in the 80s are wonderful.

QUESTION 4: Do you read a lot? If so, what are you reading right now?

NICOLA: I always used to have several books on the go. I read more children's books at the moment for school. We all know the old and gold books that we grew up with. Now I am reading new and old to broaden my author knowledge as we think reading is so important for children.

QUESTION 5: What's your favourite book of all time?

NICOLA: My favourite book? That's a good question. I don't really have one. It's usually the one I'm reading at the time.

QUESTION 6: What other projects are you working on now?

NICOLA: Other projects? I'm painting watercolours atm. Alongside taking more photos whenever the opportunity arises. You never know. There could be another book there!

QUESTION 7: What do you like most about photography?

NICOLA: I love capturing a moment in time. I will photograph the same place/artifact over again as I like to see how time and the elements have affected it. I love how with the digital age you haven't got the worry of taking a bad photograph and wasting expensive film.

QUESTION 8: Where do you see yourself and your photography in five years’ time?

NICOLA: Five years?  Goodness knows! I have been rather taken aback by what's is going on at the moment! It's just amazing... Ask me again in a couple of months! I may have come down from cloud 9!

QUESTION 9: What one, key photography tip would you share?

NICOLA: A good key tip is, when using whatever means of equipment, is to 'frame' the shot first... If you see it as a finished photo. Then click!

QUESTION 10: What would you say to inspire young photographers?

NICOLA: I would say to any young photographer is to just get out there and find whatever it is that you like and photograph it! Don't be scared of taking images that don't work to your liking and don't be scared to experiment! Good luck!
